Yacht Delivery (Wiki)

I thought I would share with you some recent reading I have been doing whilst between delivery jobs. I started by looking up the definition of “Yacht Delivery” on Wiki and noted the following in the summary:-
Quote from Wiki :-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yacht_delivery

“there is nothing preventing an owner from hiring a little-known acquaintance such as the offspring of a neighbor to deliver their boat for cheap and free, then worrying about the consequences, and causing rescue coordination authorities and larger ships diverted to their aid to enact remedial measures if and when things go wrong ”

This took me to thinking about safety and found my way to Yachting Australia’s website on “major incident reports”

http://www.yachting.org.au/sport-services/safety/major-incident-reports/

Here I read about two incidents of rudder failure during yacht races (the Audi Hong Kong Vietnam race October 2013 and the 2013 Islands race on March 8 USA) And lets not forget the incident of keel failure on a delivery crossing of our competitors in the 2013 ARC  Cheeki Rafiki” :-

Now I’m not trying to be morbid but I certainly hope the perception of “Professional Yacht Deliveries” as quoted in Wiki has changed. Peter

“ some skippers were self-serving swashbucklers and adventurers whose priorities were the use and enjoyment of the vessel rather than its safe and timely delivery, the sector’s reputation suffered in the 1970s and 1980s”
